Will McIntosh is available for virtual and in-person visits to your school.

During a virtual classroom visit, Will McIntosh will use Zoom or Skype to talk to your class.

A virtual visit can last for 15-50 minutes. Depending on the available time period and the class’s familiarity with The Classmate, his visit can include: an introduction to Will McIntosh and his book, The Classmate, a discussion of the themes and plot of the book, a discussion of how he came up with the idea and the characters, how The Classmate got optioned for television, what it’s like to write books for a living, and his path to becoming a writer. All visits also include Q&A time for the students.

Will McIntosh is available for in-person visits at schools in the local Williamsburg area. He offers assemblies and half-day visits.

His assembly presentations include a 45-60 minute analysis titled Peeling Back the Secrets of Successful Stories. Professor Joseph Campbell recognized a pattern in myths and stories across time and around the world. Inside Out, Wonder, Harry Potter, and countless other books and films follow this same basic story structure. A little screenwriting book called Save the Cat transformed Hollywood by spilling the secrets of storytelling in great detail. When you see these secrets peeled back, you’ll never read a book or watch a movie the same way again. Weaving together examples from contemporary middle grades books and movies, Will explores what makes a story satisfying, even life-changing.

A half-day visit (approximately 3 hours) can include 1-2 assembly presentations and/or several student discussions. During student discussions, Will will meet with groups of students who have read The Classmate or groups of students who read and write fiction to talk about the themes and plot of the book, how he came up with the idea and the characters, how The Classmate got optioned for television, what it’s like to write books for a living, and/or his path to becoming a writer.
