“Fast paced and full of heart! I gobbled up every word of this book buffet!” –Frank L. Cole Author of The Afterlife Academy The long anticipated sequel to Evertaster is now here. Readers have been asking me for this book for years, and I’m finally done. First I had to tour 300 schools across the country, start my own publishing company, finish Evertaster: The Buttersmiths’ Gold, publish Chum, kickstart Fetch, do animation for Warcraft and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and have 2 more children. Phew! Now I can finally tell you the next phase in the Johnsonville’s story. Here’s what happens to Guster in this book: Ever since he took a bite of a legendary dessert last summer, twelve-year-old Guster Johnsonville has never been the same. In fact, when a strange little man dressed as a conquistador comes clattering into the barn at the back of the Johnsonville farmhouse one afternoon, he forces Guster to face the truth: Guster is now the most delicious thing in the whole world, and a terrible monster is coming to eat him. The monster is one of the Yummies—a pack of horrible, ferocious creatures with an appetite for sweets. What other choice do Guster, Zeke, and Mariah have than to run away from home to escape the mysterious beast? On the run in a far corner of the world, Guster and his siblings discover a secret settlement known as the Delicious City. Now, with the Yummies hot on their trail and…

True Heroes

September 10, 2015

It’s not very often I get to be part of something like this. 19 other authors and I each wrote a short story for a book called True Heroes. True Heroes is a collection of modern-day fairy tales about real kids who are fighting cancer. I wrote a story for the book for Ellie, who’s always dreamed of being a baker: Ellie’s was diagnosed with stage 2 of differentiated sarcoma of the kidney in 2013. She is currently in remission and able to lead a much more normal life. Her dream is to be a baker. So Jon Diaz, the talented photographer behind the project made it happen. True Heroes is one of those projects you just want to be a part of and hope that it succeeds. Some other authors felt the same way, like Brandon Mull (NYT Bestselling author of Fablehaven), Jennifer Neilsen (NYT Bestselling author of The False Prince), and my buddies Chad Morris (Cragbridge Hall Series), and Jeff Savage (Mysteries of Cove). Their stories are all in there too. If you’re near Provo, Utah this Saturday, Shadow Mountain Publishing is hosting a launch party with many of the authors of True Heroes at the Provo City Library Saturday, September 12th at 3pm. Photographer Jonathan Diaz used his portrait photography skills to bring the kids’ dreams to life with photos. I first met Jon when a friend introduced us because Jon wanted some advice on the publishing world and bringing his book to life. I was really happy when his book found a publishing home….

San Diego Comic-Con Highlights

July 14, 2015

It’s no secret that I love Comic-Con. San Diego of course, has always been the king of Cons. I get professional passes because of my work as a VFX artist. So on a whim, I hopped a flight and spent Friday and Saturday learning the true meaning of comics. I jumped off of Big Ben on the Assassin’s Creed obstacle course. Think Parkour meets American Ninja Warrior. Don’t worry, there’s an airbag at the bottom. There was a healthy dose of World of Warcraft items from the upcoming Warcraft movie. I thought this was cool, since I haven’t really been able to talk about working on that film. Now some of our work is going public. Warcraft comes out June 2016. Here’s one of the Orcs: And here is one guy from the Alliance, brought to you by Weta Workshop and their Armory. I’ve always loved their craftsmanship: And then, of course, there was Batman, back to a classic suit from a bygone era: I don’t care what the screenwriters or comic writers say, Superman would totally win. And finally, some amazing cosplay. The turtles from the 90’s era movie, incredibly well done and pretty amazing: I’ll be on a couple panels at the upcoming Salt Lake City Comic Con, as well as signing books. So come on by if you’re in Utah. That’s September 24-26. Stop by the Future House Publishing booth too, and I’ll sign a copy for you.

Orson Scott Card Buys the Evertaster Movie Rights!

Adam Sidwell
|
October 7, 2014

You know how I spent 10 years making VFX and animation for movies? Well, a few months ago, some producers actually approached me and asked if they could buy the movie rights for Evertaster! I just signed the papers a few weeks ago, and was waiting for it to be public before I gave any details. I confess, when I was working on King Kong or Tron, I always dreamed of putting my own story up on the screen one day. I didn’t have 100 million dollars (which is what it takes to make some movies), so I started writing instead. And then BOOM! This happens. The unexpected. The wonderful. And guess who has set out to turn Evertaster into a movie? That’s right. Orson Scott Card, creator of the famous Ender’s Game and a writer I respect. I couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Mr. Card. Here’s a blurb from Publisher’s Marketplace: Veteran special effects director for TRON and KING KONG, Adam Sidwell’s EVERTASTER, which follows the adventures of an 11 year-old picky eater as he travels the globe in search of the elusive “gastronomy of peace”, the most delicious recipe the world has ever known, all while being pursued by a cult of murderous chefs, to producer Orson Scott Card, and Peter Johnson of Taleswapper, by Alyssa Eisner Henkin at Trident Media Group. So there you have it. Now when will this happen, you ask? This summer? Next year? The truth is when someone buys the movie rights, they have a specific…

The Most Exciting Thing You’ll Do This Summer

Adam Sidwell

July 9, 2014

Summertime for me is magical. I could write a whole book about it. Heck, maybe I will. But for now, I just wanted to share some of my summertime favorites with you. You see, there was this pond in Utah that I used to visit every summer in college. I borrowed a friends bike — not sure if we told her what we were using it for. This is what we did: That wasn’t my video. A couple years later some cool guys (one named DevinSupertramp) went and filmed it. The trick was you had to attach a milk jug to the bike so it didn’t sink to the bottom. Our milk jug broke free and blub blub. The bike was gone. So I started diving. Luckily, I found a pedal on the first try, and hauled it back to shore. When we got it out of the water, we realized it wasn’t our bike. Somebody else lost theirs too. Back I went, and boom! I grabbed hold of another pedal on my second dive. I hauled that one back to shore and sure enough — not our bike. I pulled no fewer than 5 bikes out of the pond that day. So I shared. I gave them away to all the pond jumpers who hadn’t brought their own. Eventually I found our bike, and it was happily returned to its owner. If you happened to be 1 of 5, or maybe 80 who lost their bike to the pond circa…

Well, I didn’t sleep much last night. My book is about to get released into the wild. (I wonder if Edwin’s this nervous). Luckily, my Kickstarter friends got copies and have enjoyed them so far, so that really gives you a boost. It’s not that I didn’t think Fetch was great. I always loved it and I think it’s beautiful. Every time I read it I think – there’s not one thing I’d change about this book. It’s just… you wait to for it to finally be revealed so you can hear what people think. So far so good. We’ve had some great 5-star Amazon ratings, and people have been posting all over facebook about it. I’m having a good day. If you haven’t yet, go get your copy. You won’t regret it. Click here. SLC Comic-Con Appearances

It seems like Salt Lake City didn’t get enough Comic Con back in September, so they’re hosting something called the FanXperience. Which means I get to go again. I’m kind of excited because the Doctor’s most loyal and best (not up for debate) companion will be there. As well as that scoundrel and knave of Bespin, Lando Calrissian. If you happen to be there, I’ll be on a couple panels talking about writing and making VFX for movies. I even get to do a solo performance. Here’s the schedule: Thursday 3pm: Putting the Movie in Your Head on Paper (this one’s all me). Thursday 6pm: Young Adult and Middle Grade Fiction: Its Appeal to All Ages Friday 6pm: The Power of Imagination: Writing for Kids and Kids at Heart in Today’s Market Friday 8pm: The Hero’s Shadow: Writing Great Villains Saturday 1pm: Writing Children’s Books Saturday 3pm: VFX & Animation: An Inside Look at the Magic of Avatar, X-Men, Pacific Rim, Ender’s Game, & More Saturday 5pm: Writing Fantasy for Young Adults & Middle Grade Audiences So come say HI. Come heckle me. Or ask some questions that we’ll prearrange smart answers to. I’ll post lots of pics to Instagram (@adamglendonsidwell) and Facebook. Either way, I think this is going to be fun.

Is Kickstarter the New Way to Publish Books?

Adam Sidwell
|
September 19, 2013

I’m riding high right now. Just a few hours ago, my Kickstarter campaign for a book I’ve been working on called FETCH funded 101%. The goal was $22,000, and we got it! Thanks to so many backers (you guys are so great!) who believed in my project, FETCH is going to come to life! Here’s why this is a very good thing: printing books and illustrating books is expensive, and basically Kickstarter gives you a platform for people to pre-order your book before you ever make it. In many ways, this is a publisher’s dream. Publishers fret and agonize and cast perfectly awesome books out the window for a single (yet very important) reason: they think it won’t sell. That’s why they’re so wary to take on debut authors. They have no numbers to show how that author’s work will perform. So what if you had a bunch of pre-orders all ready to go before you even made the book? It would give you the confidence to move forward with the project. Not to mention the capital. Fetch will actually cost more than $22,000 to make. But that seemed like a reasonable goal to hit, and, since Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, setting it higher would increase the risk of coming up with $0. You have to have written the book though. That you can do for free, and it gives your backers confidence in you when you have things to show them. With Kickstarter you’re making a promise. “Hey, if you pre-order this book,…

So, thanks to all of you awesome supporters, we’ve come a very long way since last week. It hasn’t even been a week yet, but here’s where we are at (this cool widget keeps us updated on the progress): The first week or so, it was mostly people I knew who backed the project, now, slowly, names of all sorts of people are showing up on the backer list. This I think is the key: moving out beyond my circle of friends and Evertaster fans into something larger. That’s when momentum gets rolling and the Kickstarter community starts to take more notice — when they see their friends backing projects, it makes someone say “Oh, what’s this?” So I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has backed so far. If you’d like to share the project, you can go here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adamsidwell/fetch-an-illustrated-book And below the video you can click “<>Embed” to put the widget on your blog, or click the facebook or twitter icon. FETCH on Kickstarter — How Kickstarter works.

Adam Sidwell
|
August 25, 2013

I love being able to use Kickstarter to create Fetch. Making this illustrated book has been a dream project of mine for some time now. I’ve been scheming at it, building it in my head and turning the story this way and that. I was blown away by Edwin’s first finished pages. Now it’s finally happening. When you release a book, there’s kind of a scary feeling like… “What if nobody reads it?” Well, with Kickstarter, we’re able to find out who wants to read the book before we put down the considerable work, time and expense of getting the illustrations finished and the print run done. It’s basically like if we were all in the same room and I asked for a show of hands “Who wants to a copy of the book?” and then when we get enough hands going up, we print it. The cool thing though is that Kickstarter is not so much asking for donations as it is taking pre-orders. Basically, if you sign up for the $19 reward, you get the book! $25 gets you an autographed copy. And then there are even cooler rewards like getting a big 18 X 24 print of one of the pages of the book, signed by the artist Edwin Rhemrev. That way it’s a fair exchange instead of me just asking for help. With the way Kickstarter works, the earlier everyone backs the project, the more momentum it gains, and so the better it will do. We’re quite…

FETCH – Good Rewards. How You Can Help Make My Next Book Happen

Adam Sidwell
|
August 22, 2013

I’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign for my first picture book, FETCH. It’s the story of where dogs come from. If you aren’t familiar with Kickstarter, here’s how it works: you “back” a project for a certain $ amount, and in return, you get some really cool rewards. If we get the full funding amount, we go through with the project and make the book. If we don’t, then the book doesn’t get made and nobody gets charged for their pledge. So the key is that everyone works together to share the project with their friends on Facebook, Twitter, email, etc so that we can hit the goal. Think of it more like this — if we get enough book pre-orders, we’ll make the book. What’s cool about Kickstarter is the rewards. It’s less like a donation and more like you get the chance to pre-order the book or other items. I’ve listed some really valuable rewards on the page, like this: For $10 you can get a digital pdf of the book. For $19 you can get the book (that’s the retail price of the book + shipping). For $63 a print from one of the pages signed by the artist, Edwin Rhemrev. Some of the higher end rewards are: We do a google chat session together Your name printed in the book Your dog painted into the book. I fly you to Los Angeles and for a helicopter ride and we hang out. Come see what this book and the rewards are all…

Anyone who’s interested in checking out the Kickstarter project before it goes live and seeing a sneak peak of the book message me here: https://www.evertaster.com/contact/ Your feedback is appreciated! Especially when it comes to the rewards. Basically, if we get as few as 1000 people to pre-order the book, we’ll print it. I’ll post here once the project is ready on Kickstarter to accept donations. There are going to be some really cool rewards for taking part!

The Next Evertaster Book

Adam Sidwell
|
February 26, 2013

Hello everybody. Many of you readers have been asking about the next Evertaster book, while I secretly sit in my castle writing, rubbing my hands with sinister delight, planning and scheming as to how I might just write the story, then bury it underground forever so know one knows what happens next but me! Mwahhahahhaahhahhajustkiddinghahaaha. Throw down the drawbridge! Come inside! Have some Medieval mutton! (watch out for that rat). Now would be a good as time as any to explain my plans for the Evertaster series. Look below: Basically, there are going to be 3 main books, Evertaster #1 (secretly titled Course of Legends), Evertaster #2 The Delicious City, and Evertaster #3 The Final Season. I know I’m not making this up, because it says as much in the back pages of Evertaster #1, right before the About the Author page. If you have super keen eyes, you might even have noticed references to those books in The Master Pastry Chef’s library in chapter 3. (If you want to check right now, I’ll keep this blog post warm while you’re gone.) The main story line is plotted out, and I’ve even begun writing the Delicious City. I hope to have that to press this fall. In the meantime though, since that’s a long time to wait, I had to write a story about these guys: Remember Torbjorn and Storfjell and joggling the bovines? Well, those two Buttersmiths have a story to tell you. Guster and the Johnsonvilles aren’t…

To Tell a Story

Adam Sidwell
|
August 7, 2012

For nearly a decade, I’ve spent my life making blockbuster films. It was a long road and many years of hard work to get there, but the lure of telling stories was too strong to resist. I had to work in the movies. A week after graduating college I packed my bags and headed off to Hollywood to work on my first feature as a Technical Director: the film I,Robot. There I was, in Hollywood, making my dreams come true! The work was hard — I spent a year programming systems that enabled the computer generated robot co-stars in I,Robot to come to life. I’d read Isaac Asimov since I was a boy, and now this was in some small way my chance to touch his greatness, to put his vision on the screen, to get as close to his stories as I could. I,Robot was nominated for an Academy Award that year, and there, rolling across the screen with the rest of the credits appeared my name: Adam Glendon Sidwell. I thought that nothing might ever be more satisfying than that. For a time, there wasn’t. The film industry took me to New Zealand to build characters for the Academy Award winning King Kong. It took me to George Lucas’s Industrial Light + Magic to work on zombie pirates for Pirates of the Caribbean. It took me to Los Angeles to build lightwalls and digital characters for TRON: Legacy. It allowed me to work on the upcoming Ender’s Game…

How an Unknown Indie Novelist Became An Amazon Bestseller in a Single Day

Adam Sidwell

June 16, 2012

My name is Adam Glendon Sidwell, and yesterday I was liberated. On Wednesday, no one knew who i was. I had never published a book before. Only two dozen people in the world had read my work. But by the end of Thursday, somehow my young adult novel Evertaster had risen as high as #51 on the overall Bestseller List on Amazon, surpassing the Amazon rankings of many of the current NYT bestsellers. It rose to #16 overall in Children’s Books, and within its category rose to #1 in Children’s Mystery, settling in nicely right next to John Grisham’s latest novel and the 3rd Percy Jackson Book, which happens to be a NYT Bestseller as well. And the funny thing is, there was no one to do my marketing but me. I tried to publish through the Big Guys for years. I even got an amazing agent interested in my work. There were many wonderful editors at the various houses who championed the story. They fell in love with my characters. They fought for them. But when it came down to the final decision from the Bosses it was always the same. You should write something more like Percy Jackson or John Grisham, they said. “We don’t know how to sell your book.” That’s when I thought: Well I do. Of course it was naivety, to think I could go up against The Publishing Giants. But I had to try. I believed in the story I was telling. I believed…
